Power Macintosh G4 (AGP Graphics) — Digi 002 Rack Requirements

With Pro Tools LE 6.1.2 for Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar)

Apple G4 (AGP Graphics) Computers Supported:

Note – the best performance with Mac OS X and Digi 002 Rack is achieved by using fast dual processor Macs. Slower, single processor Macs will work with Digi 002 Rack, but at a reduced track and/or plug-in count.

Dual Processor

Single Processor

Dual 800 MHz Power Mac G4 QS   733 MHz Power Mac G4 *
Dual 867 MHz Power Mac G4 MDD   733 MHz Power Mac G4 QS **
Dual 1 GHz Power Mac G4 QS   800 MHz Power Mac G4 QS
Dual 1 GHz Power Mac G4 MDD   867 MHz Power Mac G4 QS
Dual 1.25 GHz Power Mac G4 MDD   933 MHz Power Mac G4 QS
Dual 1.25 GHz Power Mac G4 FW800   1 GHz Power Mac G4 FW800
Dual 1.42 GHz Power Mac G4 FW800   1.25 GHz Power Mac G4 MDD

Legend:
QS = "Quicksilver" models from 2001-2002
MDD = "Mirrored Drive Doors" models from 2002
FW800 = FireWire 800 models from 2003
* Early "Digital Audio" 733 with level 3 cache
** "Quicksilver" 733 without level 3 cache.

The following Power Mac G4 AGP computers are qualified for use with Digi 002 Rack, but may result in lower performance:

  • Apple Power Mac G4 (AGP Graphics) - 667 MHz and under

The following computers are unsupported for use with Digi 002 Rack

  • Apple G4 cube
  • Apple Power Mac G4 (PCI Graphics)
  • Apple Power Mac Blue & White G3 and older
  • Apple iMac (G3 models)
  • Apple eMac
  • Apple PowerBook G3 (Pismo) and older
  • Apple iBook (Clamshell)

Additional Requirements & Known Issues

Mac OS 10.2.6 or 10.2.8 Required

Audio Storage Requirements for Record and Playback:

SCSI Accelerator (Host Bus Adapter) Card NOT required:

Although Pro Tools LE 6.1 supports a full 32 tracks of record and playback on a dedicated ATA/IDE or Firewire hard drive, use of a SCSI HBA card with a SCSI drive can increase some performance aspects of your Pro Tools system: for more information refer to the Audio Storage Requirements page.

The following SCSI HBA cards are qualified with Pro Tools LE 6.1 for Mac OS X with the PowerMac G4 models listed at the top of this page:

FireWire Drives and Power Mac G4 "FW800" Models

The following problem exists with the Digi 002 & Digi 002 Rack and the 2003 Power Mac G4 "FW800" models with FireWire 800 ports:

  • Recording with the Digi 002 or 002 Rack to a FireWire drive connected to any of the 3 built-in Firewire ports on these computers can result in -6085 errors.
  • On these computers, Digidesign recommends using a dedicated internal ATA/IDE drive for recording.
  • The use of a Third Party FireWire PCI card is necessary with FW800 machines with Digi 002 or 002 Rack if the user wishes to either record to or boot from an external FireWire drive. If using FireWire drives with Digi 002 or 002 Rack & the 2003 Power Mac G4 FW800 models, a FireWire PCI adapter card must be used.
  • This problem only occurs on the 2003 Power Mac G4 FW800 desktop models. All other supported computers can use FireWire drives connected to the built-in FireWire ports.

MIDI Interface — USB Only

Dual Monitor AGP Graphics Cards

  • NVIDIA GeForce4 MX (as shipped from Apple — standard on the 933 MHz & Dual 1 GHz "Quicksilver", 1 GHZ & Dual 867 MHZ "mirrored drive doors" models)
  • ATI Radeon 7500 (as shipped from Apple — standard on the 800 MHz Power Mac G4)
  • ATI Radeon 9000 Pro (as shipped from Apple — standard on the Dual 1 GHz, Dual 1.25 GHz & Dual 1.42 GHz Power Mac G4 "mirrored drive doors" models)

Note: The NVIDIA GeForce4 TI & ATI Radeon 9700 Pro built-to-order optional graphics cards from Apple not tested.

All single or dual monitor cards which ship as standard equipment with qualified Apple Power Mac G4 models at the top of this page are supported with Pro Tools 6.1.

Maximum Performance Guidelines

  • Recording to the system startup drive is not recommended or supported
  • For desktop models, a separate internal (IDE) or external dedicated FireWire drive is highly recommended for maximum performance and track count
  • When using FireWire storage with Digi 002 Rack systems, connect the Digi 002 Rack and the drives to separate FireWire ports if possible
  • If only one port is available, connect the drives to the CPU using a 1 meter firewire cable, then connect the Digi 002 Rack to the drives

Known Incompatibilities

  • Digi 002 will not function if any Digidesign PCI cards are installed in the CPU. (Digi 001, Audiomedia III, TDM cards, SampleCell)
  • Pro Tools 6 does not work in the OS 9 "Classic Mode". You must choose Mac OS X as your Startup Disk.

Digidesign Core Audio Driver for Mac OS X

  • Digidesign Core Audio Driver 6.1.1 or higher required to support the Digi 002 or Digi 002 Rack hardware.
