Does Sound Designer run on PCI PowerMacs with the Audiomedia III or Pro Tools III PCI?

Sound Designer versions 2.81 and earlier do not support Digidesign's PCI hardware. Sound Designer 2.82 runs on Pro Tools III PCI and Audiomedia III hardware. A free update from version 2.8 or 2.8.1 to version 2.8.2 is available in Software Downloads

Sound Designer 2.82 does not support plug-ins when running on PCI hardware, but will otherwise have all the functionality of other Sound Designer versions. The AudioSuite plug-in architecture for Pro Tools provides this functionality within Pro Tools 4.0 and higher. return to top

When I choose "Select All" in Sound Designer, why doesn't it highlight the whole file?

This is a graphic bug with version 2.8 of Sound Designer. It turns out that this problem only happens at one zoom magnification level. By zooming in one level the highlighting will appear. Though the program may not graphically show you the selection, SD II actually does Select All. To verify the selection, use the left/right cursor keys (the arrow keys located on the Mac keyboard) to jump to the beginning and end of the selection. return to top

Sometimes Sound Designer II version 2.8 appears to process my audio with Time Compression or Expansion, but the file is unchanged when it finishes. How do I make it work?

Sound Designer version 2.8 is prone to this, but there is an easy work-around. If you highlight a small section of the file with "allow edit undo" selected, process it in the Pitch Shift module with "time correction" selected, then undo that process, the DSP will be reset and Time Compression or Expansion will function properly. return to top

Why do the DATs I record digitally from AMII sound muffled or dull? I noticed that Emphasis is enabled on the DAT Machine when the DigiSystem INIT loads.

This problem is caused by the DigiSystem INIT (DSI) 2.9 or 2.91, which mistakenly sets the Emphasis bit to On in the AMII digital output. This is resolved by updating to DSI 2.92 (or higher). You must throw away the DigiSetup file and restart the computer to allow the new DSI to work properly. return to top

I've heard that the Tascam DA-30 is not compatible with Digidesign hardware. Is this true, and are there any solutions?

Every attempt was made to achieve complete compatibility with currently shipping DAT decks. However, due to the way the DA-30 interprets the digital signal, a loud noise burst (when the DA-30 is record enabled), or a click (written at the start of the transfer) can occur when recording to the DA-30 via its S/PDIF input. This problem can occur between any Digidesign S/PDIF output (Audio Interface 442, 882 I/O,882 Studio, & Audiomedia II) and the DA-30. There is no known problem with AES transfers from Audio Interface to DA-30, and this problem is not found on any other compatible DAT Machine.

The workaround is to toggle the digital input selector on the DA-30. This resets the clock and overcomes the problem in most cases.

A modification can be performed that permits DA-30 compatibility on Audiomedia II cards serial number 21,500 or lower, or any 882 Studio Interface, but this will create compatibility problems with other DAT decks. Users can have this modification performed for a nominal fee. Please contact Digidesign Technical Support to arrange for the return authorization and repair.

Audiomedia II cards serial number 21,501 and up have a user configurable jumper setting for DA-30 compatibility. These jumpers are located on the top edge (the edge opposite the Nubus connector) of the card, near the analog and digital RCA connectors. The jumper settings are labled "DA-30" and "other". return to top

When I try to install Sound Designer II, I get the error message "Geneva10 font could not be installed." Why is this happening?

The Sound Designer II Installer was based upon System 7.1 which contains a Fonts Folder. System 7.0 and 7.0.1 do not have a Fonts Folder. Even if you create a folder inside the System folder called "Fonts", the installer will still fail. The best solution is to update to the System 7.1 or 7.5, both of which are officially supported with Sound Designer 2.8. System 7.0 and 7.0.1 are not supported with Sound Designer 2.8. return to top

Why is my audio playing back slow? It seems to happen after I import audio from my DAT.

This problem is caused by the Sync Mode and Sample Rate settings in Sound Designer II's Hardware Setup. After digitally transfering audio from a DAT, you should set the Sync Mode in HardwareSetup back to Internal. This way the software will reference a sample rate clock either on the card or the peripheral attached to the audio card. If SD II's Sync Mode set to "digital" in the Hardware Setup and no clock source connected to the digital input, or the device is turned off, Sound Designer will play back extremely slow or not at all.

If the file plays back about 10% slow or fast after switching from digital to internal sync, the sample rate selected in the Hardware Setup window did not match the sample rate of the digital source. return to top

Why don't I have the ability to dump samples to my sampler as was possible under previous versions of Sound Designer?

Sampler drivers were removed from Sound Designer starting with version 2.6. The drivers were removed from the program because of timing considerations. The Sampler drivers were written using a Mac II and standard 1MHz MIDI interface. The resources needed to update the drivers and keep them current with significantly faster Macs and MIDI Interfaces required a large amount of resources. Passport'sAlchemy, Jupiter Systems' Infinity, and Gallery Software's Interpreter, are just a few products which are engineered for just this purpose. return to top

When I try to execute a command in Sound Designer II, I get the error message "Could not complete the request because the file is missing or alreadyin use," or "...was left open," "...is locked," or "...disk error." Why?

Beginning with Sound Designer 2.7, you can select a location for SoundDesigner to create temp files used for Undo, clipboard, and "Use BackupFiles". Before this time, temp file locations were always assigned to the drive and folder from which Sound Designer was launched. However, if the temp file folder or drive is removed, Sound Designer does not know where to put temp files and posts the above error. To alleviate the problem, reassign your temp file location, quit and relaunch Sound Designer, and try the editing function again. return to top

Why am I getting the message "disk 1 is not the right disk" or "disk 1 can't be read" when installing SDII 2.8?

If you experience these errors during installation of Sound Designer II 2.8, you can install it manually. Simply drag Sound Designer II and the SDII Sample Rates folder from the floppy onto your HD within a folder, then copy the DigiSystem INIT into the System Folder's Extensions Folder andrestart the Mac. When you launch SDII, it will prompt you to insert the Install 1 disk for authorization. Authorize the HD with your Install 1 disk. return to top

Why does my audio sometimes play back at the wrong pitch?

Sample Rate Sync. The 442, 882, and 888 Interfaces give you 3 sync options. This determines where the Interface will get its clock, and therefore what speed the audio will play at. In Internal sync, the Audio Interface runs off its internal crystal. In Digital sync, the interface is running off an external clock (from a DAT Machine, for example). In Slave mode, the Interface is running off the crystal in a Video Slave Driver, SMPTE Slave Driver, or another Audio Interface. If you are experiencing pitch problems, verify that you are in the correct sync mode (for example, don't try playing with sync set to digital if the DAT Machine is off), and that the sample rates in all the software and hardware match. return to top

Why can't I install Sound Designer II (2.82 or earlier) onto a computer running MacOS 8.0 or 8.1?

Sound Designer II 2.82 was released prior to MacOS 8, and its copy protection is not fully MacOS 8 compatible.  A work around would be to boot the Mac off OS 7.6.1 to install and authorize (or deauthorize) the Sound Designer II application onto the MacOS 8 drive.  Once SDII is installed and authorized, it should be able to run under MacOS 8. An upgrade to Sound Designer II v2.8.3 with OS 8 compatible authorization disks is available from Customer Service. Sound Designer II is compatible with Mac OS 8.0 thru 8.6, but has been discontinued and was never tested on Mac OS 9
