Mac OS Requirements — Pro Tools TDM & LE v5.0.1 & Pro Tools FREE

System Software

  • Pro Tools 5.0.1 and Pro Tools FREE will only work with Mac OS v8.6 & v9.x
  • Pro Tools 5.0.1 and Pro Tools FREE will not work with Mac OS X
  • Classic Mode under OS X is also not supported. If you have a dual-boot system with both Mac OS 9 and OS X, you must choose Mac OS 9 as your startup system either in your Startup Disk Control Panel or by holding down the Option key during startup to use Pro Tools 5.0.1 or Pro Tools FREE. Systems that can only boot in OS X cannot be used.

The required Macintosh Operating System depends on which Power Macintosh you use with Pro Tools, as follows:

Mac OS v8.6, v9.0, v9.0.2, and v9.0.4 Settings & Requirements

  • Mac OS Base Extension set and Digi System extensions (See Pro Tools Mac FAQ #1 for more information)
  • Set default cache (in the Memory Control Panel) to "Custom, 512k"
  • Set Energy Saver Control Panel to "Never"
  • In the Appearance Control Panel, disable "Smooth All Fonts On Screen" and change system font to other than "Charcoal"
  • Firmware v1.1 required for Blue & White G3 computers running OS 8.6. Available from Apple at: http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n58374
  • If Norton Utilities is used it must be Norton Utilities v4.0 or higher to ensure compatibility with HFS+

Special Notes for OS 9.0 users:

  • Pro Tools 5.0 or higher and DAE/DSI 5.0 or higher is required with Mac OS 9.0 or higher.
  • The Digidesign Control Panel requires OS 9.0 or higher
    When using Digidesign Control Panel, turn off Platinum Sounds in the Appearance Control Panel

Special Notes for OS 8.6 users:

  • When using Digidesign Output Drivers, turn off Platinum Sounds in the Appearance Control Panel

Pro Tools 5.0.1 and OS 9.1:

  • Mac OS 9.1 will only be tested with Pro Tools 5.1 or higher. While Pro Tools 5.0.1 may work with OS 9.1, this configuration is untested and therefore not supported.
